The Business – IT Strategic View

An IT manager today must have a forward-looking view of the role of IT in the business and anticipate changes, business needs and resources available. This need is driven by the current transition to the digital enterprise and is a major factor in delivering new business products and services. It requires significant changes in the execution of the business within the organization and also within the Information Technology organization. IT is becoming the main infrastructure of the business and, as such, the IT manager has to understand the strategic implications of each IT solution or service affecting the organization.

Bearing the above in mind, this course focuses on the challenging transition occurring both within IT and in the dynamic changes emerging and evolving in the relationship between IT and the business. The material in this course covers all the approaches that a Strategic IT manager needs to meet these challenges.

Prerequisites:

  • A laptop is required and must allow installation of software.

Certification Requirements

All course attendees must meet minimum testing standards including in-class exercises to receive certification (75% is the passing grade).

Gil LawareGil Laware is Managing Partner of Information By Design (IBD), Inc. a professional services firm founded in 2005 with practice areas in business performance and intelligence management, business and enterprise architectures, application and system development implementations. IBD provides CIO services and other professional information technology services for various companies. He has over 30 years of consulting and industry experience with Fortune 50 companies. He has experience in manufacturing, transportation, government, finance and banking services.

Gil has project experiences in: business and IT strategic planning; business process management, redesign and improvement; enterprise, business and data architecture; data warehousing and business intelligence; emergency management systems, enterprise resource planning, project management; manufacturing systems; and customer relationship management. Previously, he was an Associate Professor of Computer and Information Technology in the College of Technology at Purdue University, an Associate Director for Fujitsu Consulting, Manager of Data Services for Whirlpool Corporation, Vice President of Information Services for Franklin Savings Bank, held various managerial and consultative roles with the IBM Corporation, and was President of Management Support Systems.

Gil has authored over 50 papers including a NIST chapter discussing the gaps that exist in the software development process that supports manufacturing systems. He was a founder of the Kansas City DAMA Chapter and served as the Vice President of Finance for the DAMA Education and Research Foundation. He provides training seminars on business strategy/planning and IT strategic planning approaches for CIO’s and IT Managers nationally and internationally.
